LinkedIn Character Limits: Posts, Headline, About, and Comments
A LinkedIn post can run up to 3,000 characters, but the feed truncates it after roughly 210 characters (about 3 lines) behind a "…see more" link — which is the number that actually matters for how your post reads before someone clicks to expand it.
All the limits, in one place
| Field | Limit |
|---|---|
| Post | 3,000 characters (truncated at ~210 in the feed) |
| Headline | 220 characters |
| About / Summary | 2,600 characters |
| Comment | 1,250 characters |
| Connection request note | 300 characters |
Why the post limit matters more than it looks
3,000 characters sounds generous, but the real constraint is the ~210-character preview. Whatever you write there — before "…see more" — decides whether anyone reads the rest. Making the first line or two visually distinct (bold, or a short standalone sentence) is one of the few formatting levers you actually control; the LinkedIn Text Formatter converts a line to bold or italic Unicode characters you can paste into that opening hook.
Headline and About section
Your headline (220 characters) is the one-line tagline under your name — it's visible everywhere your name appears, including in search results and comments, so it's worth treating as prime real estate rather than just a job title. The About section (2,600 characters) has room for actual context, but the same rule applies as with posts: put the reason someone should keep reading in the first sentence, since LinkedIn truncates this section behind "…see more" too.
Comments and connection requests
At 1,250 characters, a LinkedIn comment can be a short paragraph, not just a one-liner — useful to know if you're writing a substantive reply rather than "Great post!". A connection request note is much tighter at 300 characters, which is exactly why a generic one gets ignored — there's no room to pad it, so it has to be specific from the first line. The Message Templates page has starting points sized for both.
